Well, considering the ordeal that he had been through, and his insanity-drive desire to make sure that his family was alright, you wouldn't be thinking as clearly as you normally would. It's not like he was a professional soldier, who'll continue to perform his duties normally under extreme pressure; doctors generally don't have to try and operate on people knowing that either you're family is going to die or they're going to die.
We can sit here and look on it with hindsight thinking, "Wow, what an idiot." But put yourself in his shoes (or shoe, depending on which part of the movie you're watching) and think about what you would do to be with your family.
